WASHINGTON (REUTERS, AFP) – Republican and Democratic leaders in the US Senate have reached an agreement to hold a vote on Saturday night on a US$1.1 trillion (S$1.4 trillion) spending bill, passage of which would end the threat of a government shutdown.

A Senate Democratic leadership aide said the first of three votes related to the measure could come within the hour.

The spending bill would fund activities ranging from Pentagon weapons purchases to federal aid for community law enforcement and education programs.

It contains US$1.014 trillion in discretionary domestic spending, plus US$64 billion in military overseas contingency operations in places like Iraq and Afghanistan.
