Update: 12:20PM UN secretary general Ban Ki-Moon has welcomed the release of the 45 Fijian soldiers, part of United Nations Disengagement Observer Force peacekeepers, who were held hostage in the Golan Heights.

Mr Ban in a statement released today has appreciated the efforts of all concerned to secure their safe release.

He also emphasised to all parties the impartiality of United Nations peacekeepers.

“UNDOF is on the ground to monitor the Disengagement of Forces Agreement between Israel and Syria,” Mr Ban said.

He also demanded for all parties to respect UNDOF’s mandate, freedom of movement and the safety and security of its personnel.
