MOSCOW, October 22 (RIA Novosti) – The Metropolitan Police’s SO15 Counter Terrorism Command has arrested a 25-year-old woman on suspicion of preparing terrorist acts in relation to Syria, a police spokesman said Wednesday.
“Officers from SO15 Counter Terrorism Command have this morning arrested a 25-year-old woman in Bedfordshire on suspicion of preparation of terrorist acts contrary to section 5 of the Terrorism Act 2006,” a Metropolitan Police spokesman was quoted as saying by The Telegraph.
According to the spokesman, the woman was taken from Bedfordshire to a central London police station and remains in custody while officers are investigating two addresses in the area related to the incident. Police said the arrested woman was allegedly planning to travel to Syria.
On Tuesday, The Guardian quoted Met Police commissioner, Sir Bernard Hogan-Howe as saying that some 500 British nationals have travelled to Syria to fight alongside the Islamic State (IS) and at least some five Britons join the Islamic extremist group per week.
The IS is a Sunni jihadist militant group which has beheaded a number of Britons and other westerners in Syria. The militant group has been fighting the Syrian government since 2012. In June, the group extended its attacks to northern and western Iraq, declaring a caliphate onto its captured territories in both countries.
