Defence spokesman Chris Olukolade said a bearded Islamist fighter identified as Mohammed Bashir was killed during fighting in the town of Konduga, in Borno state.

Bashir, who was said to have had several aliases, had “been acting or posing on videos as the deceased Abubakar Shekau, the eccentric character known as leader of the group”, Olukolade said.

Security sources claimed in July 2009 and in June last year that Shekau was dead.

The military did not say how or when Shekau died.

  • Nigerian police said yesterday that one of more than 200 schoolgirls kidnapped by Boko Haram nearly six months ago had been found, but local elders rejected the claim.
